Sydney L Steele, Senior Counsel / Partner
Mr. Steele’s law practice is primarily focused on the Americans with Disabilities Act, civil construction, employment and contract litigation, arbitration and mediation. Mr. Steele’s emphasis on construction litigation arises out of his educational background in engineering, as a graduate of Purdue University in Mechanical Engineering.
Mr. Steele is also engaged in substantial litigation and alternative dispute resolution proceedings defending clients in employment as well as ADA discrimination claims. He has developed an intimate understanding of the ADA, particularly as it pertains to high stakes testing
Mr. Steele attained the highest “AV” rated attorney by his attorney peers, and continues to maintain his “AV” rating. He was also designated a distinguished attorney fellow by the Indianapolis Bar Foundation.
Mr. Steele is licensed to practice law in Indiana, including all state and federal courts, as well as the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. He has also appeared pro vice for clients throughout the United States, including Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Colorado, Pennsylvania and New York.
Mr. Steele is an enrolled Neutral with the American Arbitration Association, and has arbitrated and mediated numerous disputes, primarily involving construction issues. He has also served as an advocate, as well as a private mediator, to resolve construction disputes without the necessity of expensive litigation. The American Arbitration Association (AAA), is a not-for-profit organization with offices throughout the U.S., providing services to individuals and organizations who wish to resolve conflicts out of court.
Mr. Steele was born and raised in Martinsville, Indiana. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 1961. At Purdue, he was a member of Phi Delta Theta and Pi Tau Sigma fraternities and president of the Senior Class. Mr. Steele then obtained his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University School of Law, Bloomington, Indiana in 1964. At Indiana University law school, Mr. Steele was president of the Student Bar Association and an Associate Editor of the Indiana Law Journal. After law school and passing the Indiana state bar, he served three years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany, and attained the rank of Captain. When he completed his military service, Mr. Steele returned to his home state of Indiana and began the private practice of law.
Since 1968, Mr. Steele has appeared before state and federal courts throughout Indiana as well other states, and has developed a special knowledge in the fields of complex construction, business and commercial litigation, mediations and arbitrations. Mr. Steele currently serves as general counsel for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners, Inc., an Indiana non-profit corporation, and other non-profit organizations, advising his clients on matters concerning, contracts, employment, ADA and other issues and disputes that typically arise and affect large and small corporate and other business entities.
Mr. Steele is active in his community outside of the practice of law. He served as president and a board member of the Columbia Club, where he is now its general counsel. He was a board member and president of Big Brothers of Central Indiana. Mr. Steele is also a member of the board and an officer of the Center for Leadership Development, an organization founded to encourage and prepare minority youths for college, leadership and excellence. He was recently awarded the “Henry Bundles Leadership Award” for his services to CLD, as head of its building committee. In 1982, Mr. Steele co-founded the Indianapolis Law Club, an association of experienced litigation attorneys who meet regularly to stay current on developing legal matters.
Mr. Steele is a member of the American Bar Association, including the Litigation Section and Construction Law Forum, the Indiana State Bar Association, including the Litigation and Construction & Surety Law Sections, and the Indianapolis Bar Association. Prior to joining Kroger Gardis & Regas in 2003, Mr. Steele was a founding member of Lowe Gray Steele & Darko in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was a partner for 32 years.
